Zilia (instrument)

The Zilia (Greek: ζίλια), are a type of Greek traditional auxiliary percussion instrument. The zilia are very small like bells, made by iron or wooden cymbals and played with the fingers. They are similar to Crotalum (κροταλα) in that they are used as an accompaniment to Christmas carols, Greek island dances, and weddings and festivals when the dancers beat their fingers in various rhythms. The zilia are also known as: τσίγκλες (tsigles}, σαχάνια {sachania}, or σαχανάκια {sachanakia}.
